Eventually Bruce came grip that he cannot live without Batman and he accepts the calling into fighting crime. ![]() As time went on Gotham City’s violence grew and so did Bruce’s yearning to come out of retirement. It was not until Bruce decided to retire from being Batman that he realized his passion was in crime fighting. He loved to fight crime, dressed in his hero suit, and punching people (McCloud 66). When Gotham City’s criminals commit crime, a part of Bruce is troubled. Bruce did not hesitate to accept his fate he willingly and happily goes back into vigilantism. The caped crusader persuaded Bruce that his true lifestyle was fighting crime. Without Batman, Bruce feels that he does not have a reason to breathe. Ultimately, Gotham City’s crime and Batman’s voice is what led Bruce into recapturing his yearning for adventure.īatman’s sole purpose is to prevent crime in Gotham City and as crime continues to prosper, Batman reawakens in Bruce. As Batman continues to lurk within Bruce’s conscience, Bruce does not hesitate to live his previous life of crime fighting. The alter ego that has developed from Bruce has grown into a second identity branching from Bruce’s retirement. When Alfred points out Bruce’s physical change, Bruce is stunned that he had not realized his mustache was shaven. Batman’s influence on Bruce is addressed early in the novel on page 11 panel 7 and 8 when Alfred confronts Bruce saying, “‘Master Bruce, whatever happened to your mustache?’” (Miller). Bruce Wayne’s call to adventure was reborn when the caped crusader in him decided to reemerge. His conscience was not able to find comfort as Gotham City’s crime grew with the absence of Batman. The call to return to adventure came from within Bruce. The presence of Batman lives in Bruce and influences his physical acts. Since retirement, the absence of Batman has taken a toll in Gotham City and Bruce. As Bruce grew older, he developed an alter ego to handle crime aside from a badge this gave birth to Batman. Bruce’s conscience has been through troubles since the death of his parents as a boy. ![]() Maybe facing their inner demons is what makes them our superheroes.īruce Wayne was seduced back into heroism or, as Gotham City views it, vigilantism. We want to believe our superheroes as super human but seeing them facing their inner voices somehow doesn’t diminish from their super human ability. For someone who is remembered as a hero, and looked at in times of increased crime as a symbol of hope, its unsettling for that same hero to be afraid of his own shadow. This is summed up in the final frame of Book One where he looks at Harvey Dent and sees himself, his inner monster (Miller). What was most disturbing is how Batman views himself as a monster. It was quite possibly a critique to society to see how people remembered Batman as a legend in his “retirement.” Yet, when he returns, many switch sides and place him in the villain category. The reporting of the news anchors were especially important as it helped narrate what was going on and told both sides without bias. This is probably to illustrate, not just the drama of the scene, but also as a way of Bruce remembering that even in slow motion there was nothing Bruce could have done to save his parents. This can be seen when Bruce is remembering his parents murder, how Miller uses close to thirty panels in Bruce’s memory of the murder. It is especially significant, how Miller used many more panels than needed to convey an important scene. Notably, gutter is important as it tells the reader what happens between two panels. What was most surprising to me is how Batman recluses himself from crime fighting, maybe believing the critiques of the other people that he is not preventing violence but perpetrating it or maybe he was afraid of the demon inside himself. Batman was an iconic hero, albeit a dark one, that many people are familiar with while growing up, but one could not know many of the details that surrounded his life and alter ego. ![]()
